Talking About Talking About Art

Hello, hi, it’s good to see you again. I hope February is treating you well.

I have returned to shamelessly plug myself again. Or rather, I’ve come to invite you to a conversation. I’m trying to have more of those, these days. My plan going into 2022 was to engage more frequently and earnestly in discussions about storytelling beyond my own work or responses to the reactionary world of social media art criticism. This desire has spurred me to write several new essays that I will be publishing throughout the year.

My chosen topics include anime, music, manga, and maybe a movie or four. Who knows? Let’s give ourselves a little latitude to indulge, shall we? Those of you who keep up with me on Twitter likely know all about what I’ve affectionately dubbed the Completely Emotionally Reckless Fuck You Dad Big Evangelion Essay, which I’ve been hammering away at since August. That essay has now been split into two completely emotionally reckless Evangelion essays: one on the subject of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, which just concluded last year, and one on the subject of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

The first of the Evangelion essays titled Made with Human Hands: The Rebuild of Evangelion will be coming out soon. It’s a personal look at my relationship with the Rebuild films, specifically 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time, and my complex feelings on it. The second will likely be coming sometime in the summer and is as of yet untitled. It will be a wildly ill-advised personal essay about my deeply messy relationship with the show over the last two decades, spanning trauma, memory, sexual identity, creativity, and how 3.0+1.0 helped me uncover the glut of memories I had buried from my time with Neon Genesis Evangelion as a teenager.

My therapist would approve.

(Maybe.)

Either way, I think it’s what Hideaki Anno would have wanted for your girl.

Basically, I just want to talk about art and feelings and stuff. To that end, it’s very fortuitous that Rhiannon from The Hag’s Cottage has graciously invited me to be a part of her new live series, Seance.
